MOORESTOWN, NJ — The speed limit may soon be lowered in what has come to be referred to as a dangerous “S” curve on a busy Moorestown road.

Moorestown Council approved a proposed ordinance on introduction to lower the speed limit on Golf View Road to 15 mph between East Maple Avenue and Park Drive at its meeting Monday night. The current speed limit is 25 mph.

“The character of the roadway being curved with no shoulder makes it difficult for vehicles to safely maintain their travel lane and share the road with pedestrians and bicyclists,” Moorestown Police Chief Lee Lieber said in a memo to township council recommending the change. “This change is in the interests of pedestrian, bicyclist and motor vehicle safety.”

He said the state’s traffic regulations specify a speed limit of 25 mph for residential streets with either higher or lower limits being re-designated when needed.

The proposal follows a discussion at the Aug. 10 meeting about the dangers bicyclists and pedestrians face on Golf View Road.

At that time, council discussed possibly making it a one-way street, but that was not discussed Monday night.

That suggestion was met with pushback from residents who were concerned about the speed on that road. Read more here: Moorestown Council Discusses 1-Way Option On Golf View Road

Mayor Nicole Gillespie said the township engineer is still gathering information about that and a possible path for bicyclists and pedestrians in that area.

The public hearing and final vote on the speed limit proposal is set for council’s Sept. 25 meeting. At that time, Gillespie is hoping the engineer will have a report ready, and they can reopen further discussion about the road.
