30-Foot-Deep Sinkhole Opened In New Brunswick

A sinkhole 8-10 feet wide and 25-30 feet deep opened up on George Street between Bishop St. and Commercial Avenue Saturday afternoon.

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ — A sinkhole approximately 8-10 feet wide and 25-30 feet deep opened up on George Street between Bishop Street and Commercial Avenue Saturday afternoon in New Brunswick, city officials said.

The sinkhole was caused by erosion of part of an underground culvert that is at least 100 years old, a city official wrote on the New Brunswick website. The sinkhole opened up on the sidewalk very close to a home, but city officials said the home was not in danger.

Work crews filled the hole and laid blacktop over it to serve as a temporary repair. Permanent repairs will come at a later date, the city said. Here is video from Fios from the scene:
