City Amends Ordinances to Penalize Wage Theft
Businesses who do not properly pay their employees now run the risk of losing their business licenses.

Businesses in New Brunswick that do not properly pay their employees are now at risk of losing their business licenses.Â
The New Brunswick city council on Wednesday approved changes to an ordinance governing business licenses in New Brunswick to now penalize wage theft, or the practice of an employer improperly withholding wages earned by employees.
Advocates from New Labor and Unity Square has been in talks with the council since the summer, asking the city to take an official stand against the practice.Â
In the fall, the council passed a resolution asking the state to permit municipalities more control in writing their own laws dealing with wage theft.Â
