No. 25 Rutgers Wrestling Hosts In-State Foe Rider Sunday at RAC
Scarlet Knights, Broncs renew Garden State rivalry

PISCATAWAY, N.J. (Dec. 14, 2018) – After a six-week hiatus from Piscataway, No. 25 Rutgers wrestling returns to the RAC to host in-state rival Rider on Sunday, Dec. 16 at 1 p.m. This will be the first meeting between the two schools – separated by just 30 miles – since the 2012-13 season.
Sunday’s dual will stream live on BTN2Go with Lou Brogno (play-by-play) and Nick Kosko (analyst) on the call. Matt Howe and Garret Gotthelf will have the radio broadcast on WRSU (88.7 FM).
With a win against the Broncs, head coach Scott Goodale will become the all-time wins leader in program history with 167 for his career “On the Banks”. Goodale owns a 166-63-1 record in 12 seasons with the Scarlet Knights.

• Rutgers wrestling has reached its goal of 3,000 season tickets sold for 2018-19. This marks the fourth consecutive year the Scarlet Knights have sold the most season tickets in program history, as 2,338 season tickets were purchased in 2017-18.
WHAT TO KNOW
• In its last time out, RU finished ninth at the 2018 Cliff Keen Invite from Nov. 30-Dec. 1 in Las Vegas. Anthony Ashnault (149) and Nick Suriano (133) each secured individual titles for the Scarlet Knights.
• Rutgers checks in at No. 25 in the latest NWCA Division I Wrestling Coaches Poll, released on Tuesday. As a team, RU is also ranked T/13 by TrackWrestling, No. 14/20 (tournament/dual) by Intermat and No. 14 by FloWrestling.
• Five individuals appear in the national rankings for Rutgers. Ashnault is the consensus No. 2 wrestler in the country at 149 pounds, while Suriano is as high as No. 2 nationally at 133 pounds.
• John Van Brill (157) and Nicholas Gravina (184) also appear in the national polls, with Van Brill as high as No. 14 (AWN) and Gravina as high as No. 11 (Intermat). Stephan Glasgow is No. 22 at 165 pounds according to TrackWrestling.
• In RU’s first month of the season, Ashnault and Suriano have combined for a perfect 22-0 record with 18 wins by bonus points, including nine falls, five major decisions, three tech falls and a forfeit.
SCOUTING RIDER
• Rider entered the season picked second in the EWL Preseason Coaches Poll.
• The Broncs own a 1-0 record in dual action this season after they opened 2018-19 with a come-from-behind 20-18 victory over UPenn on Nov. 29 in Lawrenceville. Senior Gino Fluri (157) and junior Jesse Dellavecchia (165) won the Broncs’ last two matches to secure the dual win.
• Dellavecchia represents Rider in the national polls, currently ranked No. 20 by Intermat at 165 pounds.
• Rider finished last season with a 13-5 mark in dual action and a second-place showing at the EWL Championships. The Broncs sent three to the 2018 NCAA Championships, where Chad Walsh was eliminated in the Blood Round.
• The Broncs are coached by John Hangey, who enters his second season at the helm of the program after serving as the team’s associate head coach.
LAST TIME AGAINST THE BRONCS
• In the last meeting between the schools, Rutgers delivered a 25-5 victory over Rider on Dec. 8, 2012 at the College Ave. Gym.
• The Scarlet Knights won eight of 10 bouts against the Broncs, highlighted by a 4-1 upset by Nick Visicaro over No. 16 Ramon Santiago at 165 pounds.
• Both squads lost one team point due to unsportsmanlike conduct following the 141-pound match.
A FAMILIAR FOE
• Sunday’s matchup with Rider will be the 20th meeting all-time between the programs.
• The Scarlet Knights have won the last five matches with the Broncs.
• Rider leads the all-time series between the two programs at 12-7. Rider’s last win in the series came on Feb. 2, 2008.
• Director of Operations Joe Pollard was a three-year varsity letterwinner at Rider, where he was a two-time Josh Hanson Award winner, given to the wrestler who demonstrates exceptional leadership, work ethic and academics.

Rutgers will send wrestlers to the Midlands Championships from Dec. 29-30 at the Sears Centre Arena in Hoffman Estates, Illinois. The Scarlet Knights’ next dual is Sunday, Jan. 6 at No. 9 Minnesota, which will broadcast live on BTN.
