Grief For 21-Year-Old, Lifelong Yankee Fan Killed In I-287 Crash
A 21-year-old man died this weekend after he was struck and killed on a New Jersey highway, according to State Police.

Friends and family were grieving over the death of a 21-year-old man this weekend who was struck and killed on a New Jersey highway, according to State Police.
David Shawiak of South Plainfield was struck and killed at 9:36 p.m. on Saturday at milepost 6 on I-287 in Piscataway, according to the State Police.
Shawiak's obituary from McCriskin Funeral Home said he was a lifelong resident of South Plainfield and attended South Plainfield High School. An avid New York Yankee fan, he also loved to play baseball.

The incident happened when a 54-year-old driver of a Subaru Forrester struck Shawiak while traveling north, police said. The woman, Elizabeth Connolly of High Bridge, was not injured and assisted on the scene.
David is survived by his parents, Daniel and Carmella Shawiak of South Plainfield; sisters Christine, Eva and Rihanna Shawiak, all of South Plainfield; uncles Benjamin, Robert and his wife RoseAnn and Steven and his wife Barbara Shawiak and Costa and Sam Natalizio.

A memorial gathering celebrating David’s life will be held at McCriskin-Gustafson Home for Funerals, 2425 Plainfield Ave., South Plainfield, 07080 on Thursday from 6 until 8 p.m. with a service beginning at 7:30 p.m.
