Middlesex County Collects 11,312 Pounds Of Food For Those In Need

This was the scene last Saturday, Sept. 26 in the Piscataway Lowe's parking lot. The number of people who need food has skyrocketed.

PISCATAWAY, NJ — A parade of cars passed through the Lowe’s parking lot in Piscataway last Saturday, Sept. 26, donating 11,312 pounds of food to be distributed at MCFOODS, the Middlesex County food bank.

For four hours, necessary foods like peanut butter, tuna fish, pasta and cereal as well as personal products including diapers were unloaded. In addition to the food donations, more than $700 in cash and check donations were received as well.

The number of families needing food in the pandemic, and due to the business shutdowns, has skyrocketed.

“We are hard-pressed to meet the need for food because the pandemic has caused an incredible rise in the need for food," said Jane Brady, the chair of Feeding Middlesex County.

"The need for food is growing due to COVID and I say thank you to the community throughout Middlesex County for responding," said Middlesex County Sheriff Mildred Scott.

The event was sponsored by the Middlesex County Federation of Democratic Women, the MCDO Black Caucus, the Middlesex County Democratic Organization, Middlesex County Sheriff Mildred Scott, Piscataway Township Police, Middlesex County Young Democrats and Lowe’s of Piscataway.

This was the third food drive in 2020, with the first held at the Menlo Park Mall in July and the second at East Brunswick’s Brunswick Square Mall in August.
