New Brunswick Man Charged in Franklin DUI Involving a Child

Federico Gomez-Alavez crashed into a parked car on Hamilton Street on Nov. 16 while transporting a seven-year-old child, authorities say.

A city man has been charged with child endangerment and assault by auto after he allegedly drove drunk and crashed his car with a seven-year-old girl as his passenger. 

According to a report on NJ.com, Federico Gomez-Alavez, 36, of New Brunswick, was driving a 1997 Ford Expedition on Hamilton Street in Franklin at 8:43 p.m. Nov. 16 when he crashed into parked 2003 Honda Pilot that had a 31-year-old woman seated inside.

Police arrived on the scene to find Gomez-Alavez attempting to flee by hailing a taxi, according to the report. Officers smelled alcohol on his breath and observed him slurring his speech, according to the report.

He was arrested for suspicion of driving while intoxicated and later released, the report said. 

The child and the woman were both injured, and they, along with Gomez-Alavez were taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, where they were all treated and released, the report said. 

Authorities were not clear on the nature of the relationship between the girl and Gomez-Alavez, but he was found to have legal responsibility for the child, according to the report.
