New Brunswick Opens Unity Square As Warming Center Monday At Noon

New Brunswick opened Unity Square Community Center as a warming center between 12 p.m. and 7 p.m. Monday, Feb. 1.

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ — Due to the winter storm and heavy snow accumulation — the worst of which is yet to come Monday afternoon — New Brunswick opened Unity Square Community Center as a warming center between 12 p.m. and 7 p.m. Monday, Feb. 1.

It will then remain open as New Brunswick's "Code Blue" warming center through Tuesday, February 2 at 7 a.m.

Please be advised that the city will attempt to accommodate all guests but space is limited. Doors for Code Blue will close to capacity at 9 p.m. sharp Monday. Due to COVID19 regulations all guests are required to wear a face mask at all times and have their temperature checked. Anyone in need of shelter or other social services is encouraged to call 2-1-1 for assistance. Last week, a homeless man was found frozen to death where he had been sleeping in a parking garage at Palisades Park.

New Brunswick Police were seen helping a stranded car Monday morning on Easton Avenue near the train station. Other than that, there have been few to no car accidents to report. Many are heeding Gov. Phi Murphy's advice to stay off the roads.

"This is a big one," Gov. Murphy said during his Monday news conference, telling New Jersey residents, "If you don't need to be out, don't go out."

New Jersey is under a State of Emergency, which means travel should be limited and residents are urged to stay home.

Murphy said the early afternoon will be the "teeth" of the blizzard and the storm will likely last until Tuesday night.
