Obituary: Retired RU Professor, Veteran and Researcher Passes

Dr. John Arthur Meade was a professor of Agronomy at Rutgers University before retiring in 1992.

Dr. John Arthur Meade went to the last “Roundup” in the sky on Wednesday, April 17, 2013.  He was 84.

Born in Coldwater, MI, he resided in Kentland, MD before moving to East Brunswick in 1966.

Prior to his retirement in 1992, he was a Professor of Agronomy at Rutgers University, New Brunswick on the Cook College Campus for 25 years, and was a part of the Rutgers Cooperative Extension.  Prior to that, he did research at the University of Maryland.

He received his Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees from the University of Maryland, and his Doctorate from the University of Iowa Class of 1958.

He was a member of the NJ Christmas Tree Growers Association, and the Northeastern Weed Control Conference.

He was a Peacetime Veteran of the US Navy, having served in the Office of Naval Intelligence. 

He was predeceased by his wife, Betty Lee Hitt Meade in 2005.

Surviving are two sons, John Stephen and his wife Mary Hudeck of Old Bridge, and Michael and his wife Elaine Meade of Mt. Holly; a sister, Rosalie Moetza of Holland, MI; a sister in law, Jackie Meade of Marshall, MI; five grandchildren, John, Colleen, Scott, Jared and Geoffrey; four great grandchildren, Lucian, Valentino, Nolan and Natalie; two step grandchildren, Vena Melnick and Moria Guzman-Rhodes; two step great grandchildren, Christopher Rhodes and Alexis Rhodes; and his devoted caretaker, William Bumekpor.

Funeral services will be held at 9 a.m. Monday in the Rezem Funeral Home, 457 Cranbury Road, East Brunswick. Interment will follow at the NJ Veterans Cemetery, Arneytown.  Relatives and friends may call at the funeral home from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Sunday.
