Rutgers Students Robbed By Bicycle Bandit

A Newark man allegedly robbed two Rutgers students on Saturday in the vicinity of Easton Avenue.

A Newark man was arrested Saturday night after he allegedly robbed two Rutgers University students at gunpoint.

The two students, a 21-year-old Metuchen woman and a 21-year-old Westfield man were walking in the area of Guilden Street and Mine Street around 10:15 p.m. Saturday when they were approached by Tyrone Johnson, 44, of Newark, riding a bicycle, according to a press release from the New Brunswick Police Department.

Johnson allegedly showed a silver handgun that was later determined by police to be an imitation gun and ordered them to turn over their valuables.

The students handed over cash and their cell phones and Johnson fled the area on the bike. He was soon located by police, according to the release. 

Johnson was arrested and charged with Robbery and Possession of a Firearm for an Unlawful Purpose.
