Carmen Maria Machado to Speak at Rutgers University

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—Carmen Maria Machado, acclaimed author of the bestselling memoir In the Dream House and the award-winning story collection Her Body and Other Parties, will speak at Rutgers University-New Brunswick. The event will be held virtually through Zoom on June 23 at 4:30 pm. Attendees will be given the chance to hear Machado speak about her writing during the event, which is co-sponsored by Rutgers-New Brunswick Office of Summer & Winter Sessions and the Rutgers-New Brunswick Libraries. An audience Q&A session will follow the author talk.
Machado is an American short story author, essayist, and critic. Machado is currently a writer-in-residence at the University of Pennsylvania and a recipient of a 2019 Guggenheim Foundation fellowship. Her work has appeared in The New Yorker, The New York Times, Vogue, and This American Life. She has been a finalist for the National Book Award and a winner of various awards and prizes, such as the Bard Fiction Prize and the Lamba Literary Award for Lesbian Fiction.
Machado’s smash hit debut story collection Her Body and Other Parties and award-winning memoir In the Dream House blend realism with elements of horror, sci-fi, and experimental fiction to eloquently address difficult topics: sexuality, intimate-partner abuse, body shame, and much more. Her prose is clever and compassionate, particularly attuned to irony––comic, tragic, often both at once. In 2018, The New York Times listed Her Body and Other Parties as a member of “The New Vanguard.”
