An Uncle Bill's employee recently came in and asked for a hoagie inside a pickle. It's become one of Blitz's most popular items.

OCEAN CITY, NJ — What's the dill with these pickle hoagies around Ocean City? You may have seen them at Blitz's Market or even on social media.

Many Blitz's Market customers wanted to cut out the carbs, so they already served sandwiches with lettuce wraps. But around the Fourth of July, an employee from Uncle Bill's Pancake House came in with another idea.

He asked for a pickle hoagie. Blitz's co-owner Joan Newman gave it a shot, and he loved it.

"He said it was awesome, and next thing you know, I put it on the special board," Newman told Patch. "Now it’s our third-highest selling thing that we have."

Blitz's uses the oversized pickles that delis tend to carry in barrels. Customers can create their own sandwich, but the most popular is the Italian pickle hoagie, Newman says.

Currently, Blitz's only sells them at the 21st Street location. But once that closes for the summer, they'll move it to the 34th Street shop.

And if you order a pickle hoagie without taking a picture for social media, did you really order one? Patrons have been tagging Blitz's Market on Facebook and Instagram.

Here are some of the pictures:

"It’s almost like artistry," Newman said. "People are taking cool shots with the beach and the waves in the background. It’s pretty cool."
