Dead End Bakehouse Aims For An Ocean City Renaissance
The local bakery is on a mission to introduce a strong bread culture.

OCEAN CITY, NJ — The Dead End Bakehouse at 1050 Bay Ave. is on a mission to strengthen the area's bread culture. The bakery focuses on bagels, breakfast sandwiches and is expanding into a lunch menu, starting with grilled cheese.
"This is our fourth concept," said owner Robert Idell. "We're trying to bring fun and unique dining concepts to the island."

The Dead End Bakehouse is the latest concept developed by the Idell family alongside the Drip 'N Scoop, Sunrise Cafe and Dockside Kitchen. This is the first summer for the Dead End Bakehouse since they opened in October. The lines have been out the door and approximately 1,000 bagels were sold the day after July 4, management said. Everything is made fresh.

The Flaming Hot Cheetos cream cheese on an orange bagel is a staple for the establishment and a reflection of the orange door to the eatery. Their lox has been a major hit with the locals, management said, and it shows no signs of slowing down.
"This is my first time here," said customer Kelly Toner. "They have great service and great bagels."

Two signature breads for the bakery are sourdough and brioche.
"We really enjoy it," said customer Brad Schweitzer. "I like a good bakery, we like good bagels and we really try to support them when we're down here."
