Humane Society Of Ocean City Reduces Adoption Fees On Cats

The Humane Society of Ocean City has about 90 cats. They're making it a little easier through Aug. 17 to adopt them.

OCEAN CITY, NJ — The "Clear the Shelter" initiative has helped over 250,000 pets get adopted since 2015. The Humane Society of Ocean City would love to add more of its cats to that total.

The shelter has about 90 felines, according to HSOC Operations and Development Director Phil Bellucci. While hundreds of shelters nationally will offer reduced adoption fees Aug. 17 for the "Clear the Shelters" event, HSOC will do so now through that day.

HSOC reduced its cat-adoption fee to about $25 through Aug. 17. All pets are microchipped, spayed/neutered and up to date on shots.

"We’re not really charging an adoption fee at that point," Bellucci said. "That’s really just how much it costs for the microchipping and microchip registration."

People who adopt a cat will also receive a lifetime 10-percent discount for HSOC's clinic.

HSOC has experienced more success recently in finding home for dogs. Last week, HSOC's dog population went from 13 to about five, Bellucci said. That's why they've made an extra effort to help their cats find happy homes.

"For somebody looking to adopt, if they came in today, that would actually be included in our shelter for the 'Clear the Shelters' event," Bellucci said. It’s set up so we don’t have a super influx of people just that day. We’re running it from now up until that day, and that day will kind of conclude it all."
