NEW JERSEY — Winter weather is expected to hit New Jersey on Tuesday, bringing either snow or a wintry mix to the Garden State at the worst possible time and impacting thousands of commuters.

The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory for seven New Jersey counties, saying up to 3 inches could fall in Ocean, Burlington, Atlantic, Cumberland, Camden, Gloucester and Salem counties.

A hazardous weather outlook was issued for the rest of the state, saying snow is expected to fall after 5 p.m. Expect up to an inch of snow throughout this region, leading to slippery travel and reduced visibility.

Oddly enough, temperatures are expected to stay around freezing for the next two days before climbing into the 60s on Saturday.

Much of the snow is expected to fall in central and south Jersey, but an inch could fall in the north, creating slippery and hazardous conditions during commuting hours.

Here is what to expect:

  • Precipitation will move in from southwest to northeast late this afternoon.
  • It will likely start as a brief period of rain before quickly transitioning to snow from northwest to southeast through early this evening.
  • Snowfall rates through the first half of this evening could be moderate at times, leading to visibilities below a mile, along with a quick accumulation of snow on road surfaces.
  • The snow will taper off west to east around midnight.

Here is the high-end prediction:

The fast-moving storm system will produce a swath of accumulating snow from Tuesday to Tuesday night, from the central Appalachians to parts of the mid-Atlantic and southeastern New England, according to AccuWeather.

Snow, or a mix of rain and snow, will only fall for around six hours or less in most locations, limiting how much accumulates, according to AccuWeather. The track of the storm will play a large factor in how much, if any, snow falls in the I-95 corridor from Washington, D.C., to New Jersey and New York City.

Commuters in the northern and western suburbs of the I-95 corridor from central New Jersey to Washington, D.C., will be at a much higher risk of experiencing slippery travel and reduced visibility since precipitation is more likely to fall in the form of snow, according to AccuWeather.
