Nor'easter In Ocean City: Here's What Happened

A major storm hit Ocean City. Here's what happened.

OCEAN CITY, NJ — A "major" nor'easter hit Ocean City on Wednesday afternoon, producing heavy rain and strong winds into early Thursday morning.

The National Weather Service labeled the "major" system a "nor'easter" since it was expected to produce strong, sustained damaging winds and precipitation over a 24-hour period on Wednesday.

The NWS placed Ocean City and the surrounding area under a coastal flood warning, which remains in effect until 3 p.m. Thursday.

A few people posted pictures of flooded streets on the Ocean City, NJ Flooding Facebook group, run by the Ocean City, NJ Flooding Committee, a civilian group and a chapter of Higher Ground.

Ocean City received between 1 to 2 inches of rain, reaching a water level of 6.5 feet on the mean low water scale as of 10 a.m., which exceeds the 6.3-foot threshold for "moderate" flooding.

The Ocean City School District announced that schools will use virtual instruction Thursday due to the forecasted nor'easter and the coastal flood warning put in place.

Here's the NWS's forecast for Ocean City as of 10 a.m. Thursday:

  • Thursday: Mostly cloudy, with a high near 38. Breezy, with a north wind 15 to 20 mph, with gusts as high as 30 mph.
  • Thursday night: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 27. North wind around 10 mph.
