“I’d like to thank Dr. Kane for getting our students involved with this grant. We’re excited to be able to utilize new outdoor spaces, while providing our students with an engaging learning environment to better educate them about sun safety,” said Superintendent Kathleen Taylor.

By shading this area, the students will have reduced exposure to the sun’s harmful UV rays, according to the AAD. Shade will also keep the playground equipment cooler to the touch and increases the life of the equipment.

The project will incorporate a cloth, metal or wood roof built by a manufacturer of the school’s choice.

Since their launch in 1999, the Shade Structure Program has awarded 400 shade structure grants.
