Local Monsignor Dies at 79

Visitation for Monsignor William J. Carton, formerly an administrator at Holy Cross Church in Rumson, is Wednesday, July 17 from 3 to 8 p.m. at St. Marks Catholic Church in Sea Girt.

Monsignor William J. Carton, 79, passed away on Saturday, July 13 at the Villa Vianney retirement home for priests in Lawrenceville.

Monsignor Carton lived in East Keansburg before entering the priesthood. He graduated from Red Bank Catholic High School in 1951 and attended St. Mary's Seminary in Baltimore. He was ordained by Bishop Ahr in 1959. He initially served as a Curate in churches in the Trenton area. He then served as Administrator at Holy Cross Church in Rumson, as Pastor of St Mary's Church in Deal and St. Mark's Church in Sea Girt. He retired at the age of 75, which is mandatory in the Trenton Diocese.

Monsignor Carton was predeceased by his parents, James T. and Adelaide Carton.
He is survived by his brothers, Leo J. Carton and his wife Mary Ann and James A. Carton and his wife Florence. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be on Wednesday, July 17 from 3 to 8 p.m. at St. Marks Catholic Church, 215 Crescent Pkwy in Sea Girt. Thursday, July 18 visitation is from 9 a.m. until the mass begins at 11 a.m. at St. Mark's Catholic Church. Entombment will follow at St. Catharine Cemetery in Wall Township. 

The Neary-Quinn Funeral Home, 39 South Street in Manasquan, is in charge of the arrangements.
