Quartet Surprises Shrewsbury Woman With Singing Valentine: Video

Watch this video of the Red Bank barbershop quartet deliver a surprise singing Valentine Wednesday morning to a woman at work in Shrewsbury.

SHREWSBURY, NJ — Sea Bright resident Charlie Rooney just wants to tell his wife he loves her. And he found a unique way to do so this Valentine's Day: With a serenade from the Red Bank Barbershop Quartet, an all-male singing group that is traveling Monmouth County this week, surprising people at work, at home and at the gym with singing Valentine's.

And Patch was there to tag along for the surprise! Watch the video below of Marisol Rooney being surprised while she was working behind the counter at Strokers Deli on Rt. 35 in Shrewsbury (across from the Grove shopping center) Wednesday morning.

She had no idea she was about to be serenaded with some love songs from the turn of the 19th century.

"I saw them on social media," said Rooney, who is also a Sea Bright councilman. "I think we all have an opportunity a couple times a year to tell our sweethearts how much we love them and I thought this was a very unique idea. I really love her and she has no idea this is about to happen."

"I loved it," Marisol told Patch afterwards. "I thought about taking my cell phone out to record it, but I decided not to. I just wanted to enjoy it."

The Red Bank Barbershop Quarter is jam-packed busy this week: They were in Lakewood Wednesday morning before this, where they serenaded a man in the middle of a business meeting. His wife ordered it for him. On Tuesday, Patch joined them in Hazlet, where a Holmdel man ordered a surprise singing Valentine for his mom, MaryAnn Vene of Hazlet. She was stunned and brought to tears. Watch that video below.

The price is $60 for two love songs and a long-stemmed rose. You can schedule a quartet visit for any of three days: Tuesday, Feb 12 through Thursday, Feb 14 by calling Jon Greene at 732-583-1684. (It may be too late this year, as they are quite booked.)

The barbershop quartet is part of the Chorus of the Atlantic, which practices weekly at Red Bank middle school and is always looking for more members.

The quartet surprised MaryAnn Vene in her Hazlet home Tuesday, Feb. 12. (One member got stuck in the snow and couldn't make it.) MaryAnn's son in Holmdel ordered it as a gift for his mom. She was brought to tears.

The Chorus of the Atlantic welcomes visitors to watch their rehearsals. They meet Tuesday evenings from 7:30 – 10:00 p.m. at the Red Bank Middle School, Harding Road, Red Bank. Visit online at www.RedBankChorus.org.
