SOUTH BRUNSWICK, NJ – Due to a sharp increase in coronavirus cases, South Brunswick public schools will not be transitioning to a hybrid model on Monday and instead will remain remote.

In a message to students and parents on Friday, Superintendent Scott Feder said in-person learning is paused for K-12 regular education programming and remote learning will remain in effect on Monday. The schedule and start times for each school will remain the same, and special education classes that are currently in-person will remain in-person.

Feder cited recent state public health data showing the latest three-day average at 3,530 cases and hospitalizations on Nov. 12 at 1,827.

There are currently eight South Brunswick staff members and 14 students in quarantine, Feder said.

"I absolutely hate the idea of not opening our schools, but I cannot, in good conscience, open just for the sake of opening," Feder wrote in the letter. "My responsibilities include being the steward of safety and learning. Both would be compromised by instituting as planned."

Moving forward, the school district will work on supporting the mental health of students, staff and families. Remote Learning Centers for K-12 students will occur at home building sites as soon as possible. Updates on guidance on high school winter sports are expected after Nov. 20.
