BEACHWOOD, NJ — The Beachwood Fireworks on the Toms River have been canceled for 2020.

The fireworks celebration, normally held on the Fourth of July, was postponed this summer to Labor Day, due to concerns about crowd size in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic. But that too, has been canceled, as crowd limits for public gatherings remain at 500 to limit the spread of the virus.

"The fireworks on the Toms River historically draws very large crowds (often exceeding 15,000 people in size) and having such a large concentration of people in a relatively confined area would make it nearly impossible to enforce the governor's order to limit the number of persons allowed to atttend outside gatherings," Beachwood Mayor Ronald Roma Jr. said in a letter on the Beachwood municipal Facebook page. "Maintaining proper social distancing is the responsibility of everyone."

Roma said the decision was made jointly by the Beachwood Fireworks Committee, the Beachwood Police Department and representatives from Emergency Management Services as well as borough officials.

"I realize that many people are deeply saddened by this tough decision," Roma said. "However, I also know that everyone wants to be safe and do everything they can to help reduce the spread of this horrible virus, especially with the beginning of the new school year right around the corner."
