Dog Park Rules Proposed In Toms River

A proposed ordinance will limit how many dogs are in the park at one time, require permits and impose other rules on dog park users.

TOMS RIVER, NJ ? Dog owners who are looking forward to using the dog park in the Silverton section would have to abide by a number of rules under a proposed ordinance in Toms River.

The ordinance, which was introduced at the Sept. 28 Township Council meeting, would set the requirements for use of the off-leash park off Maine Street.

The $240,000 contract awarded to Vulcan Construction in August and town officials said the park might open in October. It will have vinyl fencing 4 to 10 feet high, pet waste stations, a walking path, new landscaping, benches and recycling bins, and parking.

The proposed ordinance would require dog owners to have a permit issued by the township's recreation department to use the park, and the dogs must be properly licensed and vaccinated.

Only two dogs will be permitted per person, and up to 20 will be allowed in the park at a time. No puppies under 6 months old will be permitted. Dogs must be leashed entering and leaving the park.

Male dogs that have not been neutered and female dogs in heat are banned, as are sick or aggressive dogs, according to the proposed ordinance.

You cannot give your dog treats at the park, and you are required to clean up after your dog, under the proposed ordinance.

The ordinance will take effect 20 days after publication of the council's approval, likely sometime in November.
