Funeral Services Set For Trevor Newman, Toms River Sandy Recovery Ombudsman

The funeral services are Wednesday for the longtime Toms River resident who helped storm victims navigate recovery programs.

TOMS RIVER, NJ — Family and friends will be gathering Wednesday afternoon to celebrate the life of Trevor V. Newman of Toms River, who had served as Toms River's disaster recovery ombudsman, helping hundreds of people navigate insurance issues following Superstorm Sandy.

Newman died May 5 at the age of 71, according to his obituary on the website of Silverton Memorial Funeral Home, which is handling arrangements.

Newman, who attended Montclair State College and taught industrial arts in New Brunswick briefly, changed careers and then spent 37 years working for Allstate Insurance in various positions, training and teaching many employees over the years, according to his obituary.

In July 2013, Toms River officials hired him to work part-time as a disaster recovery ombudsman to assist people with their insurance claims related to Sandy, work he had continued up until his death.

His hobbies included building street rods and woodworking, his obituary said.

Newman was born in Woverhampton, United Kingdom, to Vincent T. Newman and Gladys Jones. He is survived by his beloved wife of 47 years, Andrea; his son David, daughter-in-law Debbie, and grandson Ryan; his son Keith, daughter-in-law Noelle, and granddaughter Samantha, as well as his many nieces and nephews, and a plethora of lifelong friends.

The celebration of Trevor’s life is being held at Silverton Memorial Funeral Home, 2582 Church Road, Toms River, Wednesday, May 10 from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. Memorial gifts in Trevor’s memory can be made to the American Cancer Society in lieu of flowers, his family said.
