Supporting Opportunities for Girls

Supporters for Girl Scouts of the Jersey Shore raised over $77,000 to help local girls develop leadership skills and achieve their potential at a charity golf event on June 21 at Deal Golf and Country Club.

Presented by Investors Bank and OceanFirst Bank, the annual Girl Scout Golf Classic brought together nearly 100 golfers and supporters to benefit the area’s largest nonprofit charitable organization devoted to girls.

More than 50 local businesses and individuals sponsored the charity event in a tremendous show of support for the essential role that Girl Scouts continues to play in the wake of the COVID pandemic, said Girl Scouts of the Jersey Shore CEO Eileen Higgins.

“Girl Scouts of the Jersey Shore is grateful for the community’s generous support for our ongoing efforts to help girls thrive as we recover from the pandemic,” Higgins said. “During a difficult time, we were able to keep girls connected and engaged. Now, as restrictions lift, we look forward to extending our reach to more girls who need our support.”

Proceeds from the Golf Classic will fund a variety of leadership experiences for girls in need, including outdoor day camp this summer at the council’s two campuses, Camp Amity Acres in Waretown and Camp Sacajawea in Farmingdale. Additionally, Higgins said, funds will support membership fees for families who may be facing financial difficulties.

Currently, Girl Scouts of the Jersey Shore serves approximately 9,000 girls in Monmouth and Ocean counties and is supported by a team of 4,000 volunteers who help deliver its mission to develop girls of courage, confidence and character, who will make the world a better place.

Board Chairperson Teri O’Connor said the council relies on the Golf Classic and other philanthropic events to “help ensure that all girls, regardless of the ability to pay, can become Girl Scouts and discover their potential.”

Serving as event co-chairs were Nina Anuario, senior vice president at OceanFirst Bank and first vice chairperson of the Girl Scouts of the Jersey Shore Board of Directors, and Victoria Magliacane, senior vice president at Investors Bank.
