Toms River Hockey Goalies Raising Funds To Fight Cancer

The Blackhawks goaltenders have been raising money in the October Saves Challenge to help fund cancer-fighting organizations. You can help.

TOMS RIVER, NJ ? The Toms River Blackhawks Hockey Club has been tallying up the saves by its goalies all through October.

It's not just a matter of logging statistics, however.

The Toms River Blackhawks goaltenders have been participating in the October Saves Challenge, where the netminders help raise funds for October Saves, a 501(c)(3) charity that works raise money to fight cancer.

October Saves got its start in 2014 raising money during October as part of Breast Cancer Awareness month. Hockey goaltenders of all ages across North America gather donations and pledges for each save they make during the month of October, and the funds raised benefit several cancer-fighting organization across the United States and Canada.

"The past several seasons, a number of our Blackhawk goaltenders have participated in the October Saves Challenge and each season the bar has been raised in their incredible fundraising efforts," said Harry McDermott, president of the Toms River Hockey Club.

The club, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary, has raised more than $30,600 in the last three years, including $12,746 in 2024. McDermott said the goal is to surpass the 2024 total. As of Nov. 1, they were about a thousand dollars shy of passing last year's total, he said.

They can continue to accept donations until Nov. 10, McDermott said, "so there is still time to contribute to a remarkable fundraising effort to make this our most successful season to date."
