Toms River Teen Hurt In ATV-Car Crash On Route 37: Police

The 18-year-old driving the ATV suffered a severe leg injury after pulling out of the woods into traffic, police said.

MANCHESTER, NJ — An 18-year-old from Toms River was seriously injured Saturday evening when an ATV drove into the path of a car on Route 37, Manchester police said Sunday.

Tyler Moran, 18, suffered a severe injury to his left leg in the crash that happened about 6:30 p.m. near Commonwealth Boulevard, Manchester Capt. Todd Malland said.

Moran was driving a blue Yamaha Raptor 350 ATV and pulled onto Route 37 from the woods along the southern shoulder of the road, pulling into the lane of travel of a red 2004 Pontiac Grand Am driven by Timothy Riggs, 39, of Toms River, Malland said.

Riggs was making a left turn from Commonwealth Boulevard onto Route 37 east when Moran pulled onto Route 37, Malland said.

Riggs and his passenger, Tonya Smith, 37, of Toms River, were wearing their seatbelts and were not injured; Moran, who was wearing a helmet, was taken to Community Medical Center for treatment of his leg injury, Malland said.

Assisting at the scene were Manchester Township EMTs and paramedics from the RWJ Barnabas Hospital System. The crash caused delays on Route 37 while officers conducted the investigation. Patrolman Michael O'Hara is investigating.
