Driver Pays For Gas With Mace At Kinnelon Station

Butler Police investigate assault and hit-and-run at Kinnelon gas station last Thursday.

A young driver from Passaic, 23-year-old Alex Dejesus, allegedly sprayed a Delta gas station attendant with mace this past Thursday, just before he struck another vehicle on his way out of the station.

According to police, Dejesus drove a black Nissan into the Kinnelon station on Route 23 South at a little after 6 PM on Thursday evening and asked the attendant to fill up his tank. Instead of reaching for a wallet and pulling out money when the car had been filled up with gas, police reports say Dejesus sprayed the attendant in the face with a can of mace.

Police said Dejesus fled from the lot at that point, but not before hitting another car being filled up with gas with his Nissan. Dejesus got onto Route 23, going southbound, according to reports, but police caught up with him in Wayne and arrested him. His car, police say, was impounded and Dejesus was charged with Robbery, Theft of Service, Aggravated Assault, among several motor vehicle violations. According to reports, bail for Dejesus has been set at $100,000.
