Morris Co. Used Car Dealer Sued For Modifying Vehicle

BUTLER, NJ — A car dealership in Morris County, The Car House, in Butler, is being prosecuted for breaking environmental laws, according to the New Jersey Attorney General and the Department of Environmental Protection Acting Commissioner.

The used car dealership is being accused of selling a Nissan 350-Z coup in August 2019 that had been tampered with through the removal of the catalytic converters that were part of the vehicle’s original emissions control system.

The client who bought the car only found out it had been illegally altered after it failed an inspection, officials said.

New Jersey law prohibits the sale of cars running on gasoline that have an emissions control device installed by the manufacturer which has been removed, detached, or deactivated.

The lawsuit brought up against The Car House is seeking a payment of a civil penalty and restitution to the buyer of the tampered Nissan, according to authorities.
