Possible Earthquake Could be Third in 3 Months in NJ

Rockaway residents reported ground-shaking as police investigate whether an earthquake happened locally, reports say.

Some say the ground was shaking, but it may not have been quaking.

Rockaway residents reported feeling what may have been an earthquake to local police on Thursday, although seismic activity was not recorded by the three nearest monitoring stations, NJ.com reported.

If the occurrence, which was felt around 10:30 p.m., was, in fact, an earthquake, it would be the third earthquake to hit New Jersey in the past three months, according to NJ.com. The first, which was confirmed by the U.S. Geological Survey, was a 2.1 quake on April 18 in Kinnelon. The U.S. Geological Survey also reported an earthquake in Rockaway on June 23, NJ.com reported.

Earthquakes have been felt in years past in Kinnelon as well. In August of 2011, Kinnelon police confirmed an earthquake that began in Virginia. The 5.8 quake was felt through most of the Mid-Atlantic region and police warned residents to evacuate buildings if they felt shaking, as resulting tremors were expected.
