I-195 Road Work In Howell, Wall Prompts Lane, Shoulder Closures

Lane and shoulder closures can be expected through Friday as drainage replacement and road repairs are made before paving this spring.

WALL, NJ - A pavement preservation project on I-195 between Route 9 in Howell and Route 34 in Wall is expected to prompt lane and shoulder closures through the rest of the week, authorities said.

From Feb. 24 until further notice, single lane and shoulder closures will be in effect on I-195 eastbound, continuing on the westbound lanes, to replace drainage inlets and make roadway repairs prior to repaving the roadway. Construction will take place Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. until 3:30 p.m.

Work will begin with the installation of portable Variable Message Signs (VMS) to provide advance notification of traffic pattern changes associated with the work. At least one lane will be maintained during construction, according to a news release from the New Jersey Department of Transportation.

Daytime closures will continue for about four months. The project is scheduled to be completed in the fall of 2021.

This spring, nighttime closures will be required for preliminary road preparation, including reflector removal and micro-milling prior to paving. A notice will be provided in advance of traffic pattern changes, according to the news release.

The $7.5 million federally-funded project is designed to preserve and extend the pavement life, improve safety and enhance road quality for approximately 14 miles of I-195 eastbound and westbound between Howell and Wall.

The work will include micro-milling and the application of Ultra-Thin Friction Course (UTFC) on the I-195 mainline, with seal applied to ramps. Pavement repairs and roadway drainage inlets in poor condition will be replaced prior to paving.

The exact timing of the work is subject to change due to weather.
