Wall Introduces Strict Marijuana Ordinance

If passed next month, all commerce related to marijuana would be prohibited in the township.

WALL—In response to the state officially making marijuana legal back in February, the Wall Township Committee introduced an ordinance during their meeting on April 28 that would ban the selling of weed in Wall and the selling of any related productions and the cultivating or growing of pot.

This ordinance is similar to the one that was passed in 2019 but was rendered null and void when the state statute was passed, according to Township Administrator Jeff Bertland. Still, the statute allows for local municipalities to adopt their own ordinance.

“There are provisions in that legislation for local municipalities to adopt regulatory ordinances,” Mr. Bertrand said during the meeting. “This (ordinance) would be Wall’s versions of that regulatory ordinance.”

Wall Township Mayor Timothy Farrell asked about the similarities between the two ordinances, which township attorney Sean Kean, whose office drew up the ordinance, acknowledged and stated that the ordinance introduced at this meeting would cover everything that it can under the current state law.

‘By being very specific, we believe that we firmly cover every scenario, and we would not be permitting any type of commerce of marijuana,” Kean said.
