WALL, NJ – At Tuesday’s Wall Board of Education meeting, Superintendent of Schools Tracey Handerhan addressed the decision made to make mask-wearing optional for the rest of the school year.

“During the past few weeks, the Superintendent’s office has received many phone calls and emails regarding the use of masks,” Handerhan said at the meeting.

Handerhan referenced Executive Order 275, which states that mandatory mask-wearing must stay in place in schools, except for cases of extreme heat.

“As Superintendent of Schools, it is my duty to ensure compliance with executive orders,” Handerhan said. “That said, I’m also charged with the health and safety of students and staff across the district.”

Handerhan said that she decided to make mask-wearing optional for the rest of the year based on the weather projections and classroom temperature and conditions.

“I re-evaluated the conditions in classrooms throughout the district today, and after assessing classroom conditions and factoring in the extended forecast through the end of the school year, I’ve determined that the district will remain mask-optional through the end of the school year,” Handerhan said.
