Local Residents Bring No. 1 Mobile Flooring Showroom to Area
With Former Careers Impacted by Pandemic, Couple Uses Change as 'Chance to do Something Different'

(CLIFTON, New Jersey)-The COVID-19 pandemic caused many Americans to consider hitting the “reset button” on their careers and Jennifer Wylie and Sean Anderson were two who pushed the button and headed in a new direction. The Fair Lawn, N.J., couple each had longtime jobs impacted by the pandemic, and given the opportunity, Wylie said they decided not to return to “traditional” jobs. “This was our chance to do something different,” Wylie said. “Do something that would be our own and do something that would make us happy.” As a result, the two are some of the newest franchise owners with Floor Coverings International, visiting customers’ homes in a Mobile Flooring Showroom stocked with thousands of flooring samples from top manufacturers. Having launched operations in April, Floor Coverings International of Clifton serves customers throughout Metro New Jersey, including Bergen, Passaic and Morris counties.
Wylie, 50, spent more than 12 years recruiting in the fashion industry and was director of talent acquisition for Tapestry, parent company of Coach, Kate Spade and Stuart Weitzman. “I originally started out at a small boutique agency in Paramus,” Wylie said. “Recruiting taught me to listen, how to pivot based on changing needs and to love learning about people.” Anderson, 47, is a former chef and restaurant manager who then spent 13 years with wholesale restaurant food supplier Sysco, managing a $4M route in New York City. “It was almost a mini-business. I managed pricing, negotiations, customer service, sourcing and vendor management. I enjoy building long-term relationships with customers. In fact, even though I’ve been gone from Sysco for a year, I still have former customers calling me,” Anderson said with a laugh.
Having made the decision to pursue new careers, the couple initially thought about owning a restaurant given Anderson’s experience. “But we knew going into anything food-based at this time was more costly and more of a risk than we were willing to take,” Wylie said. “However, we knew franchising could provide a similar experience and also provide the support we knew we needed while giving us the leeway to make decisions on our own.”

With the help of a franchise consultant, Wylie and Anderson vetted several franchisors across different industries and found Floor Coverings International to be the best fit. “We really liked the that its parent company, FirstService Brands, is a public, multi-brand company.
