Over 3K Still Without Power In Wayne Township

Some customers could be without power until early next week, though providers say they're making steady progress.

WAYNE, NJ — As the weekend approaches, over 3,000 people in Wayne Township are still without power.

PSE&G reports 2,634 customers affected by outages and service interruptions, and Jersey Central Power & Light reports an additional 474 as of 3:15 p.m.

Mayor Christopher Vergano didn't mince words when describing the response during a Friday video message.

"We are in constant communication with PSE&G and JCP&L," Vergano began. "Have they responded adequately? Obviously not, we're sitting here on Friday and we still have people without power."

Vergano isn't alone in that feeling, as some JCP&L customers took it upon themselves to get a joke off at the expense of the company, in the form of yard signs.

Despite the harsh words, Vergano acknowledged that the two utility providers have made progress.

JCP&L, with 2,930 customers in the township, estimates that power will be restored to their customers by 11:30 p.m. on Tuesday. However, officials clarified that some customers could see their service return earlier.

PSE&G, a power provider for over 2.3 million New Jersey customers, said on Friday that 90 percent of those who dealt with outages and interruptions will have their power restored as of 9:45 a.m., exceeding their own personal estimate of 85 percent by Friday.

The remaining 10 percent represent upwards of 50,000 customers who could be waiting as long as Monday to have their power restored, Chief Operating Officer Kim Hanemann said on a Friday call with reporters.

According to a tweet from Wayne Police this morning, part of Alps Road was closed Friday due to a transformer fire.

The township also informed residents that downed trees which have fallen on private property — and are not entangled or near power lines — are the responsibility of the property owner.
