Passaic County COVID Vaccine Update: What To Know

Vaccination efforts continued in Wayne this week, with 500 appointments available at the township-run clinic.

This story was updated Wednesday, April 21.

WAYNE, NJ — New Jersey has been expanding the number of publicly listed COVID-19 vaccination sites, and a number of locations have been identified in the Wayne area and elsewhere.

Some are accepting appointments directly, but some are not. But the state has suggested reaching out to those sites and seeing if getting an appointment is possible (see the area’s list of vaccine sites below).

Health Commissioner Judith Persichilli said the state plans to increase the number of vaccination sites beyond 300. State officials have said the goal is to vaccinate 70 percent of the adult population by the spring. Read more: Where To Get The Coronavirus Vaccine In New Jersey

That mission was aided this week by another eligibility expansion, with people 16 and older able to get vaccinated as of Monday.

Over 50 percent of Wayne Township residents have been vaccinated, according to Mayor Christopher Vergano, who said the latest total was over 9,000 at the township's vaccination clinic alone. Read more: Over 9,000 Residents Have Been Vaccinated In Wayne: Mayor Vergano

Wayne has been getting an expanded supply of vaccines in recent weeks, but hit a snag when it comes to vaccinating the homebound after the Johnson & Johnson vaccine was paused by state officials last week. That pause has continued into this week. Read more: More Time Needed On Johnson & Johnson COVID Vaccine: CDC Panel

The pause affected other vaccination clinics in the state, causing the Passaic County site in Wanaque to cancel appointments on two dates. Read more: Passaic County Cancels Johnson & Johnson Vaccine Appointments

However, the clinic in Wayne is still able to offer appointments, and 500 were scheduled for Wednesday, according to Mayor Christopher Vergano.

500 appointments are now available at www.waynetownship.com for the Maderna Covid-19 Vaccine on Wednesday April 21 at Macy’s for residents of or those who work in Wayne and Pompton Lakes.

Gov. Phil Murphy said the Johnson & Johnson pause shouldn't impact the state's herd immunity timeline.

"Even with this pause, our overall goal of vaccination 4.7 million adult New Jerseyans remains not only in place, but entirely achievable," he said.

Passaic County has administered 290,532 doses as of April 20, according to the state's database.

Murphy announced that New Jersey has created a county-by-county vaccine hub that reports the number of immunizations across the state. And, most recently, Murphy announced the launch of a beta version of an Appointment Finder, which is live and ready to use.

"We're working strategically and efficiently to vaccinate our frontline health care workers, law enforcement and fire professionals and long-term care center residents and staff," he said.
