Wayne Storm Update: Downed Power Lines Cause Road Closure

A severe storm knocked down trees and damaged electrical lines, but many had their power restored by Wednesday afternoon.

WAYNE, NJ — More than 1,500 people reported power outages on Wednesday morning, but PSE&G and Jersey Central Power & Light made progress getting it back on. However, the Tuesday storm also took down trees and damaged power lines, causing multiple road closures in the township.

"Please use caution and patience today with your travels as we are experiencing numerous road closures as a result of the storm damage," Wayne police said on Wednesday morning.

An afternoon update informed residents that, per PSE&G, "Ratzer Road by Valley View Terrace will be closed for an extended period of time as they work to repair the extensive damage that occurred to the power lines."

"Please stay clear of any power lines or damaged trees. Thank you for your patience as we work to reopen roadways," the department said.

As officials continue working to clear roads of dangerous power lines and downed trees, another storm is bearing down on New Jersey.

The National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory and severe thunderstorm watch throughout most of New Jersey. This comes as Tropical Storm Elsa travels up the Florida coast on Wednesday. The storm is expected to reach coastal areas of New Jersey sometime between Thursday at 8 p.m. and Friday.

A heat advisory was issued at 4:37 a.m. on Wednesday by the National Weather Service for 15 New Jersey counties — including Bergen and Passaic — and is in effect until 8 p.m. today, as daytime temperatures between 98 and 102 are expected.
