Vergano Running For Re-Election, 3 Wayne Council Seats Contested

Mayor Christopher Vergano heads up the Republican ticket while Arlene Sullivan will run for mayor as a Democrat during the 2021 elections.

WAYNE, NJ — Mayor Christopher Vergano is seeking another term at the helm of Wayne Township, likely setting up a face off between himself and Democrat Arlene Sullivan.

Three council seats are also up for grabs in 2021, with six candidates in the running.

Vergano has led the township through the coronavirus, at one point hosting daily news updates, but got himself in a bit of hot water with Gov. Phil Murphy over his handling of high school graduations amid the pandemic.

Sullivan ran for a council seat in Ward 1 most recently, and is the Democratic candidate for mayor in 2021.

Three candidates from each party are vying for three open seats on the township council. Of the nine current council members only one is a Democrat.

At large council members Jill Sasso and David Varano are seeking re-election alongside Vergano and newcomer Jason DeStefano, who is seeking a council seat.

Democrats seeking seats on the township council include, Linda Nardone-Jeffrey, Catherine Pariser and James Freeswick.
