Wayne Township Reserves Vaccine Doses For School Staff, Teachers

WAYNE, NJ — One hundred COVID-19 vaccine doses will be reserved for Wayne Township Board of Education employees starting this week, Mayor Christopher Vergano confirmed Monday.

The news was first announced during a Thursday Board of Education meeting by Superintendent Mark Toback, according to TapInto, who first reported the story.

Vergano said Monday that the township is allocating 100 doses for Board of Education employees at the township's Macy's vaccination site, located in the Preakness Shopping Center. As of Monday, 135 Board of Education employees have requested the vaccine, Vergano said.

This comes as part of a larger trend to get teachers vaccinated in North Jersey. Often, the idea is that a greater population of schools employees vaccinated leads to more in-person learning.

"I want to personally thank Mayor Vergano on behalf of the Board and our Teachers," said Board President Cathy Kazan, according to TapInto. "This is wonderful news and will go a long way in keeping our schools open going forward."

Vergano and township health officials expect to have 300 doses available at this week's clinic, meaning 200 are available to residents not affiliated with the Board of Education.

"We have had multiple requests from the Board of Education trustees, the Superintendent of Schools and the Wayne Education Association asking for assistance in getting their staff vaccinated and based on the need, we are happy to assist," said Vergano.
