Inspira Mullica Hill, Elmer Welcome Their First Medical Residents

MULLICA HILL, NJ —Thirty-six young physicians are beginning their formal training as members of the first class of medical residents at Inspira’s hospitals in Mullica and Elmer. They join 165 residents and fellows at Inspira Medical Center Vineland, creating one of the largest physician training programs in South Jersey.

With new residency programs in internal medicine, emergency medicine, family medicine and a transitional (1-year multispecialty) internship, Inspira now trains 201 physicians in 13 nationally accredited programs across its three hospitals. That number will grow to more than 250 as the new 3-year programs reach capacity in 2023, according to the nonprofit health care organization.

“We are in a pivotal moment for health care, and I could not think of a better time for the addition of these new programs,” said Amy Mansue, president and CEO of Inspira Health. “Just ten years ago, Inspira hosted its first class of residents in Vineland and now we are training 200-plus residents and fellows across our medical centers. As a network focused on the patient experience and clinical excellence, it’s a privilege and a great responsibility to train the next generation of physicians right here in South Jersey. The contributions of each resident and fellow are invaluable to our patients, community, and staff. We welcome them, and we thank our residency program faculty for the mentoring and training they provide.”

The three 3-year training programs bring twelve internal medicine residents, six Family Medicine residents and six Emergency Medicine residents to Inspira Medical Centers Elmer and Mullica Hill each year. The Transitional (1-year multispecialty) Internship brings 12 residents annually. In total, these programs had more than 2,000 applicants for their initial 36 positions.

“The care that patients receive at Inspira Mullica Hill is already state-of-the-art,” said Michael Geria, D.O., vice president of Academic Affairs and director of the residency program. “Having residents in-house and around the clock, armed with the latest education that medical schools around the country can offer, will only enhance that care.”

Inspira’s residency and fellowship programs offer one-of-a-kind educational opportunities for young physicians who receive real-world training by working side-by-side with highly skilled and experienced members of the Inspira’s medical staffs. Residents receive dynamic hands-on and classroom training from more than 100 physicians who make up the residency faculties.

The history of residency programs at Inspira dates back to the 1980s when the former Underwood Memorial Hospital launched a Family Medicine program that continued through 2020.
