Fatal Stabbing Gets West Deptford Woman 24-Year Prison Sentence

Thomas Carbin's family spoke of a man who loved life and his family before Lori Hummel killed him in December 2010.

A West Deptford woman who fatally stabbed a man in the neck and robbed him as he died was sentenced Thursday to 24 years in state prison.

Lori Hummel, 41, pleaded guilty to aggravated manslaughter in February, and must serve at least 85 percent of the 24-year sentence, or about 20 ½ years, Superior Court Judge Walter L. Marshall Jr. ruled March 28.

of Red Bank Avenue, stabbed 54-year-old steelworker Thomas Carbin in the neck with scissors several times in his Westville apartment in December 2010. Instead of calling an ambulance as Carbin suffered from massive blood loss, Hummel stole items from his home and fled.

Hummel “was selfish that day,” her attorney Bruce Warren told the court. He said Hummel, who has a drug addiction that estranged her from her daughter, “has nothing but remorse for what happened.”

Carbin’s death left his children angry and emotional, the late man’s daughter Christina said during sentencing. She found her father in a pool of blood after the stabbing, and has been afflicted with nightmares, depression and anxiety.

“I never knew anybody who loved life more than Thomas Carbin,” wife Renee said during sentencing.

Hummel was filmed on surveillance cameras using gift cards stolen from Carbin. Hummel, who knew Carbin, considered his life “less valuable than a few gift cards and some cash,” Carbin’s niece Nicole Wood said.

Hummel was also sentenced Thursday to an additional, concurrent four-year prison sentence for conspiracy to distribute heroin in the Salem County women’s detention center, where she was held after being arrested for Carbin’s killing.

Marshall further ordered her to pay $4,500 in restitution for Carbin’s funeral expenses.
