Transportation Projects Coming to West Deptford

NJ DOT will be establishing a permanent no passing zone for about a mile along Route 44 in the township. A Conrail crossing project will close Jessup Rd. Tuesday.

A pair of transportation projects along Crown Point and Jessup Roads in West Deptford will require slight adjustments from commuters beginning next week.

By a unanimous vote Thursday, the township committee approved the establishment of a no passing zone of approximately one-and-a-half miles on Route 44 (Crown Point Road) from Mantua Grove Road to Church Street.

The move was ordered after an investigation by the Bureau of Traffic Engineering. The only impact to motorists will be a new, double-yellow line in the center of the road.

"We really don’t have much say in it being a state highway," West Deptford Police Chief Samuel DiSimone said. "We’ve had accidents there."

DiSimone said the roadway is narrow, which makes it unsuitable for passing, and that it occasionally floods during heavy rains.

Conrail crossing project

The oft-delayed Jessup Road Conrail road crossing project is also slated to commence next week, DiSimone said, and will close a stretch of the road for about 36 hours in advance of the Thanksgiving holiday.

West Deptford police will be stationed at the intersection of Kings Highway and Jessup Road, DiSimone said, and Budd Boulevard will be blocked off in the other direction with traffic cones.

The entire closure is expected to last from 7 a.m. November 26 through 7 p.m. November 27, the chief said, although it could reopen earlier than that.
