NJ Transit To Get $1.4 Billion In Federal CARES Funds
Transit agencies have suffered a massive loss of ridership amid the coronavirus pandemic.

NEW JERSEY — NJ Transit will receive $1.4 billion in federal funds from the CARES (Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security) Act, officials confirmed Friday.
Transit agencies have suffered a massive loss of ridership amid the pandemic, and have been spending money to sanitize the stations and equipment.
"Just received a call from President Donald J. Trump, who informed me about this critical federal support," wrote Gov. Phil Murphy on Facebook. "This funding will help keep our trains and buses running and continue the improvements we've made to NJ Transit. Thank you, Mr. President!"

Trump had signed the CARES act on March 27, which includes $3.9 billion for public transit, as well as funds for public health spending to combat the pandemic, stimulus money for individuals, funds for hard-hit industries, and a lending program for small businesses.
"I am proud to announce that @NJTransit will receive $1.4B in CARES Act funding to assist in their continued operations and to keep people moving in the NY/NJ area!" Trump wrote Friday. "The LARGEST single Federal transit grant to New Jersey Transit ever. Together, we will prevail!"

The day before, Trump announced $500 million in funds for the Manhattan Transit Authority, which had requested help.
In order to maintain social distancing, the agency has added bus trips to some routes, and now requires face coverings for staff and riders. The agency has explained, "Executive Order 125 requires all staff and customers on NJ TRANSIT vehicles to wear face coverings. Customers should be using NJT services for essential travel only. Extra bus trips have been added to certain routes, creating a modified service level to enhance social distancing. NJT bus tickets and passes are being cross-honored on all NJT rail lines."
