Revolutionary War Historian Visits Westfield High School

Westfield High School students learned about Revolutionary War heroes and champions for the common man from a historian and author.

Westfield High School students in United States History classes were recently visited by Barb Baltrinic, author of ‘A Founder for All’, a book about Abraham Clark, signer of the Declaration of Independence.

Baltrinic discussed the prominent role of New Jersey and its dedicated citizens in the Revolutionary War and in the birth of a new government. She shared the story of Abraham Clark, who was born in Elizabethtown, now Elizabeth, NJ., and became an outspoken champion for the rights of the common man.

The historian detailed the social and political forces at play during the Revolutionary period and shed light on how siding with the patriot cause made many signers of the Declaration of Independence wanted men.

WHS Social Studies teacher James Lane summed up the event by saying the main take-a-ways of the day were enduring themes that could be applied to anyone’s life no matter what time period they are live in; themes like setting priorities, finding your passion and recognizing the personal costs of your serving country.
