Separate Fun Events Slated In A Westfield Park For Kids, Adults

Kids can hunt for "fairy houses" and take a tour of Mindowaskin Park at one event, and the other will involve a tour and drinks for adults.

WESTFIELD, NJ — The Westfield Historical Society and the Friends of Mindowaskin Park invite the community to a celebration of a local park and historic house Westfield. One event will be for families, while the other is just for adults.

For Families

For Families, the event begins at the Reeve House property (314 Mountain Ave.) on June 19 from 3 to 5 p.m. Families will first tour the Reeve House gardens and hunt for the hidden "fairy houses" (made by the Westfield Rake & Hoe Garden Club Juniors and Adults).

From there, guided tours of Mindowaskin Park and Pond will take place, where guests will learn about the park and pond life and the history of the park.

Refreshments including frozen treats will be served. There will be opportunities for souvenir professional family photos at the park’s Bandstand. The admission fee for this family event is $5 per person (children 3 & under are free).

Just For Adults

For adults, the event also begins at the Reeve House property on June 19 from 6 to 9 p.m. Adults (21 and over) will first have the opportunity to tour Mindowaskin Park.

After the tour, guests return to the Reeve House to gather at the front lawn of the historic Reeve house for a leisurely time of music by the Westfield-based band, Save Mary, covering crowd-pleasing tunes from the last four decades. Beer, wine, soft drinks, and grilled hot dogs and hamburgers will be available. The admission fee for this adult event is $20 per person and includes one drink ticket.

Guests of both events can enter a photo contest for the best photo shots of the park which participants are encouraged to take during the tours. Submissions will be accepted online, judged by professional photographers and awards will be given to 1st and 2nd place winners.

For either event, pre-registration is required. Space is limited, so reserve early by calling (908)654-1794, or email westfieldhistoricalsociety@gmail.com. The fee should be paid at the Reeve House gate upon arrival. When reserving, be sure to indicate whether you are reserving for the Family event or for the Adult event, the number attending (including adults and children), and your phone number and email address.

The Friends of Mindowaskin Park is a non-profit organization, founded in the early 1990s, to revitalize and preserve the park. The mission of the Friends of Mindowaskin Park is to ensure the long-time enjoyment of the public park by Westfield residents and patrons.

Working independently, but in cooperation with the Town of Westfield, the Friends work to ensure that the historical significance of the park is maintained and protected. Through the efforts of the Friends of Mindowaskin Park, the park has been designated a Westfield Historic Site.

The non-profit Westfield Historical Society was founded in 1968 to preserve, interpret, and encourage interest in history, Westfield, and its residents through educational efforts and community outreach programs.
