The stom was also impacting road conditions and flooding was reported in various areas (see list below).

New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy said his administration is tracking the outages across New Jersey.

The Board of Public Utilities is working closely with utilities and requesting mutual assistance in the assessment and restoration effort, which may take up to several days for some customers, he said.

"We urge all residents without power to make sure their outage is called in and to keep clear of downed lines," he said. "Residents in need of a cooling center or other shelter should call 2-1-1 for the location nearest to them.”

A severe thunderstorm warning – which means severe weather is more imminent in the region – was also issued in most New Jersey counties.

Wind gusts as strong as 60 to 70 mph and half-dollar size hail were reported, both of which could cause minor damage to vehicles. Wind damage to roofs, siding, trees and power lines also was possible.

Monday was set to be a bit rocky as far as the weather goes, with multiple hazards — including strong storms, 70-mph wind gusts and a flooding risk — being monitored by meteorologists with the National Weather Service.

Forecasters predicted severe storms Monday afternoon and evening will break the heat wave that has gripped New Jersey since the weekend. The heat was to continue Monday, but wasn't supposed to be nearly as intense as Saturday and Sunday, when the heat index hit 118.

The National Weather Service has issued a hazardous weather outlook and a flash flood watch for all of New Jersey, saying thunderstorms on Monday afternoon and evening could produce severe weather. Damaging winds as strong as 70-mph are the biggest threat, the NWS says.

Here's what you can specifically expect:

• Rainfall totals of 1 to 2 inches were expected to be common, with local amounts up to 3 to 4 inches possible. This could lead to flash flooding.
• The risk of flash flooding was highest in urbanized and low-lying areas. Rapid rises on small creeks and streams were possible.
• Every area of New Jersey was at risk of flooding and thunderstorms, but the worst of it could happen in Central and South Jersey.
• A heat advisory was in effect statewide until 7 p.m., with the heat index approaching 100 degrees.

• Monday: Showers and thunderstorms likely, mainly after 4pm. Some storms could be severe, with damaging winds and heavy rain. Partly sunny, with a high near 91. Heat index values as high as 100. Southeast wind 6 to 9 mph becoming southwest in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.
• Monday night: Showers and possibly a thunderstorm. Some storms could be severe, with damaging winds and heavy rain. Low around 70. West wind around 6 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New rainfall amounts between 1 and 2 inches possible.
• Tuesday: Showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm before 2pm, then a chance of showers. Some of the storms could produce heavy rainfall. Cloudy, with a high near 80. North wind 5 to 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.
• Tuesday night: A chance of showers before 2am. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 64. Light north wind. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible.
