Westfield 8th Graders Win Big at Science Competition

The Roosevelt Intermediate School team medaled in six events and received the first place award in Robocross at the regional competition.

Eighth graders from Roosevelt Intermediate School in Westfield were awarded first place in Robocross at the Science Olympiad regional competition held at New Jersey Institute of Technology on January 15.

Matt Leone, pictured on left, and Brandon Hipp now have the opportunity to have their robot compete in the state tournament March 10 – 12 at Middlesex County College.

“It was a great experience winning first place, because that award was announced last so it was a big surprise,” Matt recalled.

“It was pretty cool,” added Brandon. “We were able to score the most amount of points in the shortest amount of time.”

“All of our students did great and in total, we placed 6th out of 20 teams,” Science teacher Jeffrey Robbins, pictured standing, stated.

Robbins added that the team medaled in 6 of the 12 events and in addition to a first place medal in Robocross. The team also placed third in Green Generation, fourth in Dynamic Planet, and fifth in Elastic Launched Glider, Air Trajectory, and Picture This. The team also placed in the top 10 in three of the other events.
