Westfield Police Receive Pet Microchip Reader

Local business owner Rory Chadwick donated the device. Residents can register their pet's chip number with the town.

WESTFIELD, NJ - Thanks to resident Rory Chadwick, the Westfield Police Department is now the owners of a Homeagain Universal Worldscan Microchip Reader by Merck Animal Health.

"This donation will now allow us to scan found dogs and cats for microchips," officials said in a Facebook post. "In the past we were able to use a local emergency vet but that vet moved their 24/7 operation out of town."

In an effort to expedite the return of found pets to their owners, the Westfield Police Department will be working with the Town Clerk to collect microchip numbers.

According to officials, if they do not have the microchip number on file, they need to contact the vendor of the microchip to reach out to the owner and not all vendors are open 24/7.

"Our goal is to reunite the lost pet to its owner as soon as possible," they said.
