The group will be working at 2 locations. At the Groundwork Elizabeth MicroFarm and
Environmental Center, located at 740 W. Grand Street, in the rear of the Elmora Branch of the
Elizabeth Public Library, the team will be constructing a Greenhouse, planting an ‘A to Z’
flower garden, building compost beds and community garden beds, laying stone and piping to
help drainage, and installing fencing. At nearby Phil Rizzuto Park on Morris Avenue, named for
the Hall of Fame Yankee shortstop and announcer, the team will be removing invasive plants,
helping mulch trails, clearing trash and debris, and helping to firm up an eroding riverbank.
The group will arrive Monday morning by 10 a.m. where they will meet Groundwork staff for an
orientation on the work to be done. During the next few days, elected officials from the city of
Elizabeth including the Mayor, members of City Council and members of the Union County
Board of County Commissioners will visit with the youth as they work. The Westfield team will
leave the project with a greater understanding of the needs of urban agriculture and conservation
and restoration of open spaces.
