25 Suffolk Beaches Closed To Bathing: Health Officials

SUFFOLK COUNTY, NY - The Suffolk County Department of Health issued an advisory on Thursday against swimming at 25 beaches in the area following the recent heavy rainfall.

The advisory was put in place because of the potential that the presence of high levels of bacteria in these areas.

The beaches covered by the advisory are located in areas that are heavily influenced by stormwater runoff from the surrounding watersheds and/or adjacent tributaries.

Due to their location in an enclosed embayment, these beaches can experience limited tidal flushing.

Here is a full list of the closed beaches:

• Amityville Village Beach
• Venetian Shores Beach
• Eagle Dock Community Beach in Huntington
• West Neck Beach in Huntington
• Lloyd Neck Bath Club Beach in Huntington
• Gold Star Battalion Park Beach in Huntington
• Head of the Bay Club Beach in Huntington
• Nathan Hale Beach Club Beach in Huntington
• Baycrest Association Beach in Huntington
• Bay Hills Beach Association in Huntington
• Crescent Beach in Huntington
• Knollwood Beach Association Beach in Huntington
• Fleets Cove Beach in Huntington
• Centerport Beach
• Centerport Yacht Club Beach
• Steers Beach in Huntington
• Asharoken Beach in Huntington 8
• Hobart Beach in Huntington
• Crab Meadow Beach in Huntington
• Wincoma Association Beach in Huntington
• Fiddlers Green Association Beach in Huntington
• Valley Grove Beach in Huntington
• Prices Bend Beach in Huntington
• West Islip Beach
• Callahans Beach in Smithtown

Health officials recommend that bathing and other water contact be suspended at these beaches for at least 24 hours after the rain has ended until the waters have been flushed by two successive tidal cycles.

Unless sampling done by the Department finds elevated bacterial numbers persisting beyond the 24-hr period, this advisory will be lifted 7 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 30.

In addition, the following beaches remain closed:

• Tanner Park Beach in Copiague, closed since June 27
• Lloyd Harbor Estate Beach closed since Aug. 24
• Huntington Beach Community Association Beach closed since Aug. 27
• Cold Spring Harbor Beach Club Beach closed since Aug. 28
• Lloyd Harbor Village Park closed since Aug. 28
