Adopt Red

Adopt or help find a forger home

Meet Red! This stunning girl was surrendered to the Babylon Animal Shelter by those she thought loved her in September 2019. Her story is short, but beyond heartbreaking and painful to think about. Red lived her life outside, and it looked like she was used for breeding. We would all like to think that a forever home is all a dog needs to be happy and healthy, but sometimes belonging to a human is not a guarantee that a dog is safe and loved.

Keeping a dog outside sentences them to a life of loneliness and frustration; dogs are highly social animals whose ancestors, the wolves, lived in packs; they hunted together, slept together and played together. Domesticated dogs only have us, they are born to be part of a social structure, a pack or a family, yet this sadly is denied to them. Red spent her life on the outside, looking in and it is extremely heartbreaking to hear this.

Depriving any dog of human companionship by forcing them to live outside blunts their natural desires and is a form of animal cruelty. Dogs are naturally social beings who need interaction with humans and/or other animals. Intensive confinement or long-term restraint can severely damage their physical and psychological well-being.

Red has had a rough life and would love nothing more than to find a real forever home with a family who will love and cherish her. Despite her past, Red is super sweet, playful and intelligent – she is looking for her soulmate. She can be a little shy at first, but quickly becomes extremely affectionate and loving with everyone she meets. Red is a very friendly, loving 6 year old girl who is gentle, cuddly, loves to be with her people and enjoys attention and affection.

She LOVES to run and play; going in the pool and fetch are two of her most favorite things. She also loves going on walks and walks very nicely on a leash. It’s no surprise that Red likes to be outside and not confined to her kennel, but when she is inside, she is calm and knows how to relax.

So why is it that this beautiful girl is still waiting?! Red is yet another soul that suffers from skin issues and she can also be a bit crazy and possessive with her toys. Her skin issues are minor and there are occasional flare ups; they seem to simply be linked to her living as an outside dog. She specifically gets irritation under her neck and belly. The shelter staff bathes her in medicated shampoo, is careful with her diet, and feels natural remedies are best for her situation.

As for Reds toy possessiveness, who could blame her? This is a natural reaction to never having toys before in her life. She loves her toys and playing with them is very special for her; she considers them of high value and is afraid someone will try to take them away. She can get a little crazy, grabby and possessive with her toys and treats. The shelter is currently working with Red on this issue as well as teaching her basic obedience commands.

The best home for Red is with an experienced individual or family who will continue to work with her on these issues and give her the tender loving care she needs and deserves. A special Mom or Dad who are committed to her and will put in the time needed. Red would do best in a home as an only pet as she prefers to be the Princess. She is a very sweet girl who just wants all the love and attention for herself, but with her by your side you’ll need no other.

Red is also a very strong girl who will require a strong handler so she can be properly managed when passing other dogs on walks; she is very easily redirected. A nice quiet environment, a big soft bed, and some TLC from someone who has the time to spend by her side and give her that royal treatment she truly deserves will truly help her to heal better both physically and emotionally. All it takes is one day, one moment, and one traumatizing experience for any dog’s confidence to be completely shaken. Red deserves a life full of belly rubs and tail wags, the shelter is recommending a household with children ages 13 and up.

After spending her lifetime outside in a yard, Red now has been sitting in a cold noisy shelter for almost a year; never having the comforts of a proper home. Red truly cannot wait for the day when she will have a real home with a family of people to call her own. Won’t someone please give her a chance?

Red is asking for nothing more than a warm place to call home and a loving family to call her own. In return, she will give you more love and loyalty than you could ever ask for. Make an appointment to meet her, you are sure to fall in love!
